Tech tips-
- power surges enter TV through main logic board's audio video inputs or/and power board powercord, so check standby volts on power board it's either stby 3.3v or 5v dc if ok then it might be bad main board.
-most common tv repair is tv clicking on off caused by blown / swollen capacitors in power board, common for Samsung, lg, vizio, Philips
-LCD tvs that have backlight but no picture or turns off after few seconds followed by blinking red LED on TV can be bad t-con board (display timing controller) common for Sony tvs
-plasma TV that has no picture or turns off can be bad y-sustain board and ic's on buffer board. common on Samsung, Philips, lg
-always try power reset by unplugging all cables from TV for 5 minutes you'll be surprised how many times that works on TVs, cable boxes, audio amp receivers, surround sound systems.
- risk of shock when working on TVs best to unplug powercord but even if TV is unplugged it can hold juice in big capacitors so use rubber gloves.
-always take questionable TV parts out of circuit to get best meter readings and make sure meter has good batteries.
- if TV is dead "no power" check standby dc volts on power board it should be labeled on board "stby" or 5v or 3.3v (main board plug)
standby dc volts should be 3.3v or on some TVs it's 5v steady, if it jumps 0v to 5v then check capacitors out of circuit or voltage regulator on power board, if you have solid 0 volts check power cord for ac volts, check fuses or fuseable-resistors for continuity, or bridge rectifier.
-if TV shutsdown try troubleshooting by unplugging one board at a time but power resetting in between. For example on LCD TV if Tcon board is shorted the TV will force shutdown within the 1st minute as a safety feature to prevent fires. First unplug powercord then unplug tcon board out of circuit then plug in the powercord, if TV stays on without tcon board then replace tcon board (in few cases it can be faulty lcd panel). Also on plasma TVs try unplugging Y sustain board or Y buffer board to see if TV stays on.
- PCB printed circuit boards have "traces" lines that connect to tv part components, the board number is printed on the edge of the board or on a sticker. some boards have "rev."#'s which is needed with the board number.
- some TV parts can smell burnt, have burn holes, cracks on outside shell or look brownish / blacken burnt but sometimes that's mistaken by flux paste which is used to clean and bond solder joints, flux melts when heated.
- tapping on board with rubber handle of screwdriver can help find bad solder joints or loose cable connections
- using electronic freeze spray or applying hot air on different sections of boards can help diagnose tv, just check tv for any change, this works for tcon or logic boards best.
- cleaning board cable connections with electronic cleaner can fix TVs, this worked for me on Tcon board connections.
-novice tech replaces TV boards but expert tech troubleshoots tv issues and fixes TV boards down to component level saving 90% of cost of an average $100 replacement board. Many decent techs i know tend to buy the common TV repair kit for their tv model from ebay, amazon, or shopjimmy websites, costs around $20.
-tv board location #'s example F101 is fuse, D101 is diode, C101 capacitor, Q101 transistor / mosfet, T101 transformer, R101 resistor, IC101 integrated circuit chip, U101 microchip, J101 jumper, TP is test point, L is inductor coil, CN is connection, "stby" standby voltage on power board that powers main logic board.
-Plasma TV boards- power board that supply 5v to main logic board and x/z and y sustain boards that powers the buffer boards that scan in the plasma display panel. some plasma tvs have logic display control board. Most Plasma TV's X/Y Sustain and buffer boards fail.
-LCD TV boards- power board that powers a main logic board with either 5v or 3.3v standby, inverter board that powers backlight,
tcon / timing control board that connects to lcd display panel.
ccfl tubes light up lcd screen, tcon inputs images on lcd screen.
-DLP TV parts- power board, main logic board, dmd board with dlp chip, color wheel, fans, lamp, light engine.
-CRT TV parts- power board, main board, crt board, tuner, flyback transformer, tube screen, deguass coil.
-Projection CRT TV- power board, main board, tuner, 3 CRT red, green, blue, projection guns, 3 flyback transformers, mirror, screen lens.
LED TV- power board, backlight led driver board sometimes included in power board, tcon / timing control board connected to lcd display, main logic board.
Backlight LEDs light up screen, tcon inputs images on lcd screen.

Hi. great post very helpful. so I'm just curious what goes out on the zsus ?I have a dp50749 and have diagnosed it down to the z board but can't find any blown caps or fuses, no leaks, no bulging . I don't want to buy a used board if I don't have to and realy its just a fun project.so id rather just replace caps and fuses.

ReplyDeleteHey all....we were given a Phillips (model 40PFL1708/F7) tv that is dead...no power/picture/sound..etc. It does have a standby light which I'm hoping is a sign of life...I've been out of the electronics field for over 25 years but still know my way around a multi-meter. Just don't have any experience with this kind of TV. Was wondering if anyone has any experience with this model before I go in. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

ReplyDeleteWhen I power up…I see the Vizio logo …bright and clear….after a couple of seconds the Logo goes away and the screen goes blank- and the backlighting goes off.
I did the Flashlight Test and noticed the picture was there on the screen(just no backlight to make it bright) so I toggled my input to Cable or Antenna so it would receive input. When it went to the correct input for cable I could hear the current program I was watching.
I am not sure what part to replace yet.
There are only two boards in this unit…it seems very simple.
There is a power supply board and a main board.
I noticed when checking the underside of the main board three of the power supply connector’s solder joints on the main board had an orange haze to them? I took a small screwdriver for eyeglasses and made sure there was no connection on the underside of the board between 3 of the suspect solder joints.
I am not sure if this was at the factory issue or if this was caused by 2-3 years of use?...Or maybe the power supply heated up and sent over high voltage to this connected.
Do you suggest I pull the multitestor out and test voltages or is this an easy chip replacement?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

How to remove bottom two fasteners on TCL model#L40FHDM12. They look like nuts with thread below. I can remove all screws but these two fasteners. Back will not come off without taking these off.

I have a Vizio E470i-A0 that would power on for only a second and then the screen would go black and the only way to shut power off was to unplug it. I did research and everything I found lead to bad main board which I replaced with one from Shop Jimmy. Now, I am able to power the TV on and off with the power button, but the logo still flashes for a second then the screen in blank again. Back lights seem to be working fine. Do you have any suggestions???
ReplyDeleteI have a Vizio m550vse. TV loses power completely for a split-second, then goes to stand-by. After turning the TV back on, it'll start the cycle over 1-5 minutes later. I diagnosed the TV by disconnecting the T-Con and LED driver boards from the circuit. Issue still remained, so I replaced the power supply and main boards. Still having the same problem.
ReplyDeleteI have an ilo-26hdtv with hdmi with a universal remote. Played xbox on it using hdmi aquired a blue ray play and unplugged xbox to see if the blue ray player worked using hdmi it did. Plugged xbox back into hdmi and now there's no signal with either of the two. Any thoughts.

Hey bro I have lg lcd tv but the problem is its not turning on so I decided to troubleshoot the power supply unit ,so while troubleshooting I saw that AC volt section is working properly as displayed but DC volt section is not throughout power supply as displayed !!!!

Thank you so much for your expertise.I have a Samsung 51" plasma TV, model # PN51F5300AFXZA. A power surge damaged the HDMI ports only. It still works with cable running straight from the wall to TV, as well as by RCA component cable. The main board part required is part # BN94-06195F. I cannot find one for less than $100.00, used. My question is: Can just the HDMI ports be replaced or do you have any other suggestions. Thank you for your time and consideration.
