HOW TO RESET CHECK ENGINE LIGHT, FREE EASY WAY!

if check engine light comes on you can use a error code scanner to read and reset codes but if you don't have a scanner like most people then just unscrew the battery connections at the car battery for 1-2 minutes to reset check engine light. Also you can just unplug negative cable on battery for 1 minute, car auto error code reader scanner will tell you what code you have then type in that error code online. usually its a bad or dirty o2 sensor or loose gas cap or air intake sensor near air filter.

  1. This doesn't work at all.
Disconnecting your battery does NOT -- I repeat -- does NOT reset the engine light. You need a reader. They are under twenty bucks

    1. On many, it does. Some have "super caps" (high storage capacitors that don't lose charge if just sitting) that hold data. In those cases, simply leaving the battery disconnected for a longer period of time does the trick. In other cases, you can simply touch the disconnected battery leads together to discharge the capacitors, depending on the way the circuit is designed. Doing this also clears the data your vehicle has been collecting about optimizing performance for your particular driving habits...and all cars have been doing that since the 90's. A FEW of the HIGH END cars have non-volatile storage for engine codes, but again, only a few because non-volatile memory fails after a certain number of writes.

All that being said, you are right about code scanners being cheap enough that people who want to tinker should just buy or build one for about $20-30. It's not worth the guess work.

  2. My check engine came on recently, and I was able to reset the computer or ecm by disconnecting my battery after replacing the bad item. I have a mini obd scanner in which I use with my iPhone. Comes in handy.

  3. I followed these instructions to reset my check engine light and when I put the battery cable back on it wouldn't start up. The engine cranks but will not start. I have a 2002 pontiac sunfire. Please let me know what I need to do to solve this problem. It appears that the fuel pump is not working but fuses are all good.
